🌍 Google Expands AI Mode with Smarter Features

Google is taking AI Mode in Search beyond its early markets, adding both global reach and practical new tools. The update not only widens availability but also shows Google’s intent to turn AI Mode into an everyday assistant.

The Decode:

1. Global Expansion - AI Mode is now live in 180 countries, making its chatbot-driven Search experience widely accessible for the first time. While still English-only, Google confirmed more languages are planned, letting users ask complex queries and follow-ups directly inside Search.

2. Smarter Agentic Tools - Google AI Ultra subscribers gain access to new booking features that handle dining reservations with details like date, time, party size, and cuisine. AI Mode checks platforms like OpenTable, Resy, and Ticketmaster for real-time availability. Google also plans to extend this to service appointments and event tickets in the future.

3. Personalization + Sharing - In the US, AI Mode now adapts dining-related results based on previous searches, preferences, and conversations. A new “Share” button creates a public link to your AI chat, allowing friends or colleagues to continue the same thread.

Google is positioning AI Mode as more than a Q&A tool, evolving it into a proactive assistant for daily tasks like dining, scheduling, and event planning. By linking personalization and agentic actions, the feature becomes stickier inside Search. The expansion to 180 countries signals Google’s intent to embed AI deeply into everyday discovery.

🚨 Meta Restructures AI Division Under Alexandr Wang

Meta has rolled out its biggest AI reorganization yet under Alexandr Wang, head of Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL). In a memo, Wang urged staff to “take superintelligence seriously,” laying out sweeping structural changes. The move follows months of aggressive hiring, internal tensions, and dissolutions of past AI units.

The Decode:

1. Four New Teams - MSL will now operate across research, training, products, and infrastructure, with most leaders reporting directly to Wang. Nat Friedman will head products, Aparna Ramani leads infra, and Shengjia Zhao takes over research alongside FAIR. Yann LeCun and Rob Fergus at FAIR will also report to Wang.

2. FAIR + TBD Lab Integration - FAIR, long known for academic-style independence, is now tasked as an “innovation engine” feeding training runs. A new TBD Lab will explore frontier AI projects, including the mysterious “omni” model designed to unify multimodal intelligence.

3. AGI Foundations Dissolved + Hiring Freeze - Meta has shut down its AGI Foundations team, the second major closure this year after GenAI. Members will be absorbed into other teams, while hiring across AI is frozen unless Wang personally approves.

Meta is betting its AI future on smaller, talent-dense teams reporting directly to Alexandr Wang. While the restructuring could accelerate progress toward “superintelligence,” it risks deepening internal rifts and losing stability compared to rivals like OpenAI and Google.
