🤖 Meta’s AI Chatbots Will Soon Message You First

Meta is testing AI chatbots that can initiate conversations across WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram. Built with memory and personality, these bots aim to boost engagement by acting like proactive companions. But the move raises questions about boundaries, safety, and future monetization.

The Decode:

1. Bots Can Reach Out First  - Chatbots created via Meta’s AI Studio can send the first message after five prior replies from a user. These bots remember past chats and take on personas like film critics or chefs. Meta says they won’t follow up more than once without a response.

2. Built by Aligner, Styled for Stickiness - Meta partnered with data firm Aligner to train these bots on how to initiate conversations. Users can share bots via stories or add them to their profile to increase reach.

3. Monetization Is Coming - Court filings predict Meta’s AI products could bring in $2–3B by 2025 and $1.4T by 2035. Future plans may include ads, paid replies, or subscription options. Meta hasn’t clarified safety rules or age restrictions around these bots.

Proactive AI messaging could redefine social interaction, or risk turning creepy fast. Done right, it boosts retention and revenue; done wrong, it invites regulation and backlash. Meta’s next moves here will set the tone for AI’s social future.

🤖 Columbia’s STAR AI Finds Sperm Missed by Humans in Infertility Cases

Columbia University’s STAR system has helped a couple conceive after nearly two decades of failed IVF attempts. Using AI trained on astrophysics algorithms, STAR located sperm undetectable to human technicians.

The Decode:

1. AI Outperforms Human Experts at Sperm Detection - STAR scanned 8 million microscopic images and found 44 sperm in under an hour. Human technicians found none after two full days of analysis.

2. Tech Inspired by Astronomy Locates Microscopic Cells  - Originally designed to detect distant stars, STAR’s algorithms were repurposed to find sperm in dense cell samples. It links to microscopes and identifies cells without using dyes or lasers.

3. A More Affordable and Scalable Infertility Tool - STAR is currently used at Columbia’s Fertility Center, costing around $3,000. That’s significantly lower than the $15K–$30K typical IVF cycle cost.

AI like STAR offers a new path for treating male infertility, especially when conventional methods fail. It cuts both time and cost while improving detection accuracy. If validated further, it could become a vital tool in global fertility care.
